Jessie Daniels, Ph.D.

Growing up on the Texas Gulf Coast

Bio

Jessie Daniels was born and raised on the Texas Gulf Coast (seen here enjoying the coast, about age 4) and now lives in New York City.

She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. (Sociology) at the University of Texas at Austin, where she worked with Joe R. Feagin. She was a Charles Phelps Taft Post-Doctoral fellow at University of Cincinnati, where she worked with Patricia Hill Collins.

Daniels’ early research focused broadly on the social and political intersections of race, class, and gender. She is the author of White Lies (Routledge, 1997), which examines the connections of race, class, gender and sexuality in white supremacist discourse. More recently, her interests have turned to the effects of internet technology on discourse, information and knowledge about race , gender and sexuality, particularly via cloaked websites. She explores this in her latest book, Cyber Racism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2009). Daniels also conducts research into the ways that race, gender, and class shape health disparities. Specifically she examines racialized constructions of masculinity and racially segregated urban spaces can be protective of, or harmful to, health. Currently, she is at work on a number of research projects, all related to digital media, race, gender and sexuality.

Daniels has taught a variety of courses at a number of colleges and universities, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels (more about teaching here).
