Jessie Daniels, Ph.D. - ICTE

International Center for Tolerance Education (ICTE)

I was chosen as the inaugural Scholar in Residence at the International Center for Tolerance Education (2005-2006). The Scholar-in-Residence program benefitted me in a number of important ways: a) it offered financial support which allowed me to pursue and present my research, b) it provided me with beautiful office space in DUMBO, Brooklyn (pictured here) and computer resources, c) it gave me an opportunity to connect with others who share similar interests and values within the "incubator" at ICTE and d) enabled me to travel and present my research to an international audience in Brno, Czech Republic.  For all these opportunities, I am deeply grateful to Marco Stoffel, The Third Millennium Foundation, the International Center for Tolerance Education, and all the staff there, particularly Connie Jean Kendig.

Internet Literacy for Tolerance Education

One of the main projects I worked on while at ICTE was researching the way young people understand cloaked white supremacist websites they encounter while searching for civil rights information. Among the findings of this research, a participant to "search for information about Martin Luther King" and first goes to a legitimate site hosted by Stanford University, then to another legitimate site hosted by the Seattle Times. Then, in about 1 minute, she encounters the "cloaked" site hosted by a white supremacist. She sees a book cover with a picture of David Duke, but does not recognize him as a former Klan leader, and then says that she "doesn't know that much about the civil rights movement."

Seeds of Tolerance / Current TV

One of the projects I worked on while the Scholar in Residence was an intiative that in-house, we referred to as "Entertainment Education." A day-long workshop at ICTE and lots of internal meetings later yielded a video competition in conjunction with Current TV. Read more about the competition and view the videos here.
